Taxonomy of Interactions

The ThinkeringSpace platform supports a broad range of human interactions enabled through structure, technology and information and resulting from immersive settings, primed engagement and access to media. Composed of four categories, the taxonomy is an interaction framework that defines a vocabulary for describing different types of interactions and interaction needs.

Taxonomy of Interaction Categories

Engagement

Exploration

Exchange

Elaboration

Combined with ethnographic data, this framework will help to identify: a) an integrated set of environmental components and sub-components that together can support collaborative types of interaction; and b) actional properties or affordances that can correlate interactive behaviors to environmental components.

Preliminary categories include a list of elements that describes each type of interaction. For instance, engagement includes elements such as: attending, sense-making, orienting, and immersing; exploration includes elements such as: manipulating, experimenting, designing, and making; exchange includes elements such as: acting and getting feedback, cooperating, and collaborating; elaboration includes elements such as: reflecting, assessing, extending, and sharing.
