24 October 2003 ID alumni gathered in Seoul, South Korea, on October 24th for the 2nd annual ID Asian Alumni Meeting. They met at the Hotel Shilla over lunch and discussed regional and global design issues. Kun-Pyo Lee (MS '81) organized the gathering, which was held in conjunction with the meeting of the broader IIT Asian Alumni Association.
21 March 2002 Alumni in Chicago, San Francisco and New York gathered for the 4th ID Alumni Forum on March 21, 2002. The discussion topic for the evening was "Success Themes: Results of the ID Alumni Survey."
This gathering was to discuss some of the success themes that were gathered in the recent ID alumni survey. The themes gathered in the survey ranged across more than 40 years of ID's history. Alumni discussed how their professional successes tied in with their education and experiences at ID. The school is interested in gathering these success stories on an ongoing basis to keep alumni informed of each others' successes and also to highlight to prospective students and industry the influence of ID's unique education. Summaries of the Chicago and San Francisco meetings. 23 January 2002 Alumni in Chicago, San Francisco and Seattle gathered for the 3rd ID Alumni Forum on December 6, 2001. The discussion topic for the evening was "Experience Design: The Rebuilding of Design Practice." After large companies gobbled up smaller design firms only to let them go when the market soured, the design profession is rebuilding itself through the formulation of new companies and other groups exploring hybrid approaches to working. In this environment, "experience designers" are practicing multiple disciplines (e.g. user research and information architecture, or IA and graphic design or web development), either out of necessity or a reassessment of their approach. Each forum had presentations given by ID alumni. Presenters were asked to focus on how they have adapted their practice, undertaken new business development or otherwise reacted to recent market changes. Presentations focused on how a client problem was solved, what methods were employed to gain insight to users, or how new projects were won. Work examples illustrated process and discussed resulting benefits. Read the summaries of the Chicago, San Francisco, and Seattle meetings. The San Francisco meeting included discussion of this case study by Joanne Mendel about on-line collaborative worspace. If you have interest in organizing a similar discussion in your city, or would like to put forth ideas for future discussion topics, please contact Bridget Luby. Read summaries of the first and second meetings. |
