Tours

We are arranging for guided tours of design and innovation offices in Hong Kong and Shanghai, as well as to local attractions in Beijing. Below is a preliminary schedule. November 28-30 - Hong Kong

Estimated total price $600/person. Tentative schedule:

  • Nov. 28 - arrive in Hong Kong on your own
  • Nov. 29 - guided tour of Pearl River Delta industrial zone
  • Nov. 30 AM - guided tour of Gold Peak Home Lab, Hong Kong Science Park
  • Nov 30 PM - Flight from Hong Kong to Beijing

Hong Kong tours include ground transportation, tour guides, accommodation, and flight from Hong Kong to Beijing on November 29. They do not include transportation to Hong Kong from your point of origin.

November 30 and December 3 - Beijing

1. Microsoft Research Asia - November 30 - $18/person
Microsoft Research Asia conducts fundamental, curiosity-driven research with the goal of realizing Microsoft's vision of future computing and becoming one of the best computer-science laboratories in the world. The lab employs 200 researchers and 2,200 interns, has awarded 115 Microsoft fellowships, published 1,100 papers for top international journals and conferences, and achieved numerous technological breakthroughs.

During this half-day tour, visitors will see demonstrations of research projects with user interface and interaction implications. For example, Chinese handwriting recognition, camera-based input, speech-recording UI, and projects from MSRA's Asia Center for Interaction Design. The demonstrations will be high-level, concentrating on showing the tangible result of research efforts.

2. Local attractions - November 30 and/or December 3

  • Day-long tour to the Great Wall, Ming Tombs and Summer Palace (US$42/person)
  • Half-day tour to Tiananmen Square and the Forbidden City (US$30/person)
  • Half-day tour to 798 Space - a new, avant-garde space that hosts high-level cultural, artistic and commercial activities (US$20/person)

Beijing tours include transportation, tour guide and admission to each location.

December 5 - Shanghai

This tour can accommodate 5-10 people. The day has been organized and will be hosted by PG Brand and Design consultants and CBI, Design Management Consulting.

2. Motorola China Research Center / s.point design

Located on the fashionable Nanjing Road, under the leadership of Dr. Jian-Cheng Huang, the Center is a point of presence in China for Motorola Lab's Center for Human Interaction Center of Excellence, and focuses on research topics in multi-lingual handwriting recognition, advanced text input, automatic speech recognition, text-to-speech synthesis, natural language processing, and image understanding. Since its founding in January 2000, the MCRC has created and deployed a portfolio of technology modules and engines that enable state-of-the-art user interfaces for Motorola's mobile device product lines. This half-day tour will include demonstrations of these technologies in several Motorola products.

s.point design was established in 1997 as the first industrial design company in Shanghai. Founded during the boom of the Chinese economy, s.point has grown to become the most formidable international design agency located in China, with rich experience in the domestic market, design research and a large number of successfully launched products. More than two years ago, s.point design joined the designafairs family worldwide and became even more involved in the international environment with broadened information resources, designers from different cultural backgrounds, and new overseas partners and clients


The all-inclusive price for either Shanghai tour is $400. This includes flight from Beijing to Shanghai on December 4, 1-night accommodation, and transportation and admission to each location. They do not include transportation from Shanghai to your next destination.
