Ton Borsboom

Ton Boorsboom has been leader of product development for Polymer Solutions, the US-based joint venture between GE Plastics and Fitch, where he led the exploration of the boundaries of design with clients, envisioning and developing innovative products in construction, transportation, consumer electronics and IT industries. In 1998 he became Managing Director of GE/Fitch Pte Ltd in Singapore, providing industrial design and development services through an international design team with offices and clients in Taiwan, Singapore and China. He recently accepted the position of Manager Global Industrial Design for GE Plastics, based in the Netherlands.

Moses Cheng

Moses Cheng is the Senior Partner of the law firm of Messrs. P.C. Woo & Co. and also serves as an independent non-executive director of a number of companies. Between 1991-95 he was appointed and served as a member of the Legislative Council of Hong Kong. Mr. Cheng has served as Council Member of The Stock Exchange of Hong Kong Limited and is currently the Chairman of its Main Board and Growth Enterprise Market Listing Committee, and a Member of the Joint Training Committee. He has been involved in promoting corporate governance development in Hong Kong and is the Founder Chairman of The Hong Kong Institute of Directors of which he is the Honorary President.

Mr. Cheng will provide an introduction to the current legal and business landscape in China.

Victor Chu

Victor Chu is Chairman and CEO of First Eastern Investment Group, a leading regional investment firm channeling over HK$4 billion for direct investments in China and the ASEAN region. He has served as Director and Council member of the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, on the Advisory Committee Member of the Securities and Futures Commission, and as a member of the Hong Kong Takeovers and Mergers Panel. He served, before and after the return of Hong Kong to Chinese sovereignty, as a part-time member of the Hong Kong Government's Central Policy Unit. He was elected “Global Leader for Tomorrow” by the World Economic Forum in 1998. He was a speaker at Fortune Forum in Beijing in May of this year.

Di'An Fan

Professor Fan has been working on a study of 20th century Chinese painting, contemporary art critics and exhibition planning. In the past 20 years, he has been devoted to supporting and promoting the innovation of China contemporary art. Through an increasing number of art critics, many artists have been gaining worldwide recognition. In a recent series of large-scale art exhibtions, many Chinese artists were introduced to the international scene. Professor Fan played an important role in these international cultural exchanges. Professor Fan, whose academic research involves China’s various types of visual art, architecture, and public art, is a noted exhibition planner and artist.

Presentation:
Professor Fan will discuss the intersection of contemporary art and creative industry in China today.

Baomin Gong

As head of the Ministry of Appearance Design Examination of the State Intellectual Property Office, People's Republic of China, Mr. Gong is also the vice-secretary of the Industrial Design Branch of the Mechanical Engineering Institution, the permanent director of the China Industrial Design Association, a trustee of the China Intelligence Poverty Research Institution, and a subeditor of “Art and Design” Magazine. The Ministry of Appearance Design Examination is mainly responsible for the examination, certification and the processing of patents on the appearance design of products, and also oversees academic activity in industrial design and appearance design.

Presentation:
Mr. Gong will discuss the future of intellectual property rights and innovation in the People's Republic of China.

Yu Guo

Yu Guo joined Baidu as Chief Designer and director of User Experience Design in November 2004. Before Baidu, Yu worked for companies including AOL/Netscape, eBay and PayPal as senior designer. Yu was involved in many well known products such as My Netscape, Alert, AIM, AOL Wallet, eBay China, PayPal China and China Escrow Payment (AnFuTong) for Ebay. Yu received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Industrial Design from Shanghai JiaoTong University and received his masters degree in Design Planning from the Institute of Design, IIT.

Presentation:
Mr. Guo will participate in a panel discussion on Internet businesses and user experience in China.

Xiaowei Hu

After Xiaowei graduated from Foreign Affairs College, he started working for Art and Design Press in 2001 on international design networking and editing, contributing to Art and Design, Design and Contemporary Art magazines. He has one of the widest domestic and international networks of design sources in China. He planned and organized China-UK design dialogues, and edited a series of reports on design in Shanghai, the UK, Germany and Switzerland.

Presentation:
Mr. Hu will moderate a panel discussion on the growth of design in Taiwan and Korea.

Peter Lawrence

Peter Lawrence is chairman and founder of Corporate Design Foundation and a management consultant. He has taught about design at Babson, London Business School, and Boston University School of Management. For eight years, he developed and was director of the Design Management Institute (DMI). In 1985, he established Corporate Design Foundation, whose mission is to improve the quality of life and effectiveness of organizations through design, by conducting research, developing teaching material and working with business schools to introduce design into their curricula. He received a degree in economics from Lafayette College and a degree in architecture from the Rhode Island School of Design.

Presentation:
Peter Lawrence will use examples of companies including GE, Hewlett Packard, Herman Miller, Samsung, Whirlpool and others to illustrate different approaches to design management and how successful companies have moved from design management to design leadership to achieve innovation.

Kun-pyo Lee

Kun-pyo Lee is professor, head of Industrial Design, and director of the Human-Centered Interaction Design Lab at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST). He serves as vice president of the Korea Society of Design Studies, Korea Society of Emotion and Sensibility. He is also editor-in-chief of the domestic journal Design Research and editor for the international journal Design Studies. He has consulted on numerous design planning and interface design projects for Samsung Electronics, LG Electronics, SKT and Johnson & Johnson. He has received many international and domestic design awards including grand prize at the 1st Osaka International Design Competition, the best paper award at the 2nd Asian Design Conference, and the best paper award at the 2004 HCI conference.

Presentation:
Kun-pyo will introduce how industry, schools, and the government have been collaborating for the successful development of design in Korea, with case studies of Samsung and leading Korean design consultancies.

David Liang

Professor David Liang is Dean of the Design College at National Taipei University of Technology in Taiwan. He is Chairman of the board of the Chinese Industrial Designers Association, and an Advisor to the Beijing Industrial Design Centre. He was Vice President at Acer Computer in charge of industrial design and product development, and manager of the design department at China Industrial Design and Packaging Centre (Taipei).

Professor Liang will discuss the current state of design in Taiwan.

Dong Liang

Dong Liang joined Baidu as VP of Marketing and User Experience in November 2004. Dong is a well known television personality and an expert in marketing communications. From 1998 to 2004, he worked for Hong Kong-based Phoenix Television Network as a producer and host. In 2002, he was awarded "Entertainment Host of The Year" by China Television Billboard and was described as "profoundly expressing, in his unique humorous style, the paradoxical and anxious mood of China's young generation under increasingly global atmosphere."

Mr. Liang will participate in a panel discussion on Internet businesses and user experience in China.

Victor Lo

Victor Lo is the Chairman & Chief Executive of Gold Peak Industries (Holdings) Limited, a Hong Kong-listed Asian multinational group with a portfolio of industrial and technology investments in the electrical and electronics industries. He is also Chairman of the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation, Chairman of Board of Governors of Hong Kong Design Centre, and Chairman of the Council of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. He is a member of the Steering Committee on Innovation and Technology, and a member of the Exchange Fund Advisory Committee. He was Chairman of Federation of Hong Kong Industries from July 2001 to July 2003. Lo is a graduate of the Institute of Design, IIT.

Presentation:
Victor Lo will present how design can be used to help OEM suppliers transform themselves into both product and brand leaders.

Tom MacTavish

Tom MacTavish is the Vice President leading Motorola Labs' Center for Human Interaction Research, a center of excellence that focuses on creating next generation user experience solutions for Motorola products by applying user-centered design principles and appropriate multi-modal interaction technologies including voice dialogue, tactile, vision, and intelligent systems. MacTavish joined Motorola in June 1999 following more than 20 years of research and development experience with NCR Corporation.

Bruce Nussbaum

Bruce Nussbaum is Assistant Managing Editor of Business Week. He writes frequently on design for the magazine, and analyzes the annual Industrial Designers Excellence Awards and the BusinessWeek / Architectural Record AIA Awards for the magazine. He also edits the weekly Economic Viewpoint column and writes essays and commentaries for the magazine. Nussbaum is widely credited with being the leading business writer in bringing design to the world of management. He is currently developing a new on-line publication for Business Week that will focus on design and innovation. Prior to Business Week, Mr. Nussbaum was a reporter for the Far Eastern Economic Review and The American Banker.

Presentation:
Bruce Nussbaum will discuss the changing nature of outsourcing with a particular focus on the value of moving creative and innovation processes closer to the rapidly growing emerging markets.

Ben Tsiang

Ben Tsiang co-founded SINANET.com, the largest Chinese website in North America and the precursor of SINA.com. He has served as Vice President of Global Products, in charge of product integration and strategic planning with SINA's localized web sites worldwide; General Manager of SINA.com Taiwan; GM of East China, SINA.com; and Executive Deputy GM of SINA Online. Mr. Tsiang was appointed to his current role of Executive Vice President of Product Development and GM of SINA Online in November 2003. He graduated from National Taiwan University and received a master's degree from Stanford University.

Jan Stael von Holstein

Jan Stael von Holstein is Co-chairman of the Network with a Silver Lining, with particular focus on helping companies creating brands in and out of China. He was a founding member of Unimark International, and played a leading role in establishing Landor Associates and WPP/Enterprise IG in Europe. Has covered almost every industrial sector, working on complex brand and corporate identity project's, throughout Europe and the USA, including such companies as Ford, Renault, Daimler Chrysler, VISA, Shell, Elf, Occidental Oil, Accor Hotels, Banco de Santander, SAS, Alcatel, Valeo, Frontline Shipping and the Richemont group. He is a regular speaker on brand issues and design development at conferences and educational institutions, and speaks eight languages.

Presentation:
He will review the issues facing the leading brand players in China; naming, symbols and graphic interpretations, and the trends ahead in creating and developing solutions.

Andy Switky

Since joining IDEO in 1998, Andy has worked on and managed many types of programs, from traditional product development to rethinking teaching and learning in pharmaceutical manufacturing. He currently runs IDEO's Shanghai, China, office and is part of the consultancy's consumer experience design practice. Switky also runs IDEO's manufacturing group, which includes engineers and materials scientists who are charged with inspiring IDEO design with new ways of thinking about materials and processes. The group also is deeply involved in the business of making products and frequently consults on manufacturing and supply-chain strategies.

Andy will discuss the role and process of understanding users to inform design and innovation.

Yingjia Yao

Mr. Yao is Executive Director of the Innovation Design Center at Lenovo (formerly Legend Computer), maker of the best-selling desktop PC in China. He has led the development of pioneering ideas for products such as desktop PCs, notebooks, servers and Pocket PCs. In 2002, Lenovo's Kai Tian 6800 PC won the Intel Innovative PC Award, the world's only international desktop PC award. His leadership has helped Lenovo become a leader of design and innovation in China. His design team is at the forefront of user research in China and is particularly insightful about understanding the highly varied needs of Chinese consumers.

Presentation:
Yao YingJia will talk about how Lenovo gains understanding of the multiple markets inside China and how this leads to important variations in design and development.

Xinli Zhao

As the Director of User Interface and User Experience at sina.com, Ms. Zhao is responsible for structure design and front-end design for all channels in sina.com's operations. She concentrates on user research concepts and methods and uses these to inform Internet product designs. Ms. Zhao joined sina.com in 1998; before that she was in financial software development.
