WORKSHOP:

Life's Design Principles:
An Introduction to Thinking Biomimetically

We live in an ever changing environment, often struggling to find designs that fit with place and function. Yet, life has been performing design experiments in Earth's R&D lab for 3.8 billion years. What's flourishing on the planet today are the best ideas---those that perform well in context, while economizing on energy and materials. Whatever your design challenge, the odds are that one or more of the world's 30 million creatures has not only faced the same challenge, but has evolved effective strategies to solve it. Biologist at the Design Table, Tim McGee, of the Biomimicry Guild, will give a tantalizing glimpse into the rapidly evolving world of Biomimicry. The workshop will consist of case studies and a short hands-on experience to increase understanding of how humans can learn to fit in with the rest of life.

BIO:

Timothy R. McGee is a Biologist at the Design Table with the Biomimicry Guild, an innovation consulting company focused on using a deep knowledge of biological adaptations to help designers, engineers, architects, and business leaders solve design and engineering challenges. As a trained interdisciplinary biologist with professional experience in academic, private, and government organizations, Tim is interested in creating sustainable industrial systems. With a formal education resulting in a B.A. in Biology from Colby College, and a M.S. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from the University of California Santa Barbara, Tim's expertise extends to the micro and nano-size realms of materials science and energy use of living organisms. Tim's informal education includes his time as a science writer for Treehugger.com, discovering design in the CDISCO Landscape Architecture program at Harvard University, and living in the Australian outback for 4 months. Tim currently lives on the slopes of Mt. Helena, in Helena Montana.
