John has been editor-in-chief of Fast Company magazine since 2003. Prior to that he was a senior writer at Business Week where, in addition to writing over 50 cover stories, he authored eight management books, including the bestselling Jack: Straight from the Gut, in collaboration with former General Electric CEO Jack Welch.

Sara Cantor is a Design Planning student at the Institute of Design. She has co-chaired About, With and For, the student-run conference on design research, for the past two years. Her project work at ID has focused on arenas such as home health care, learning tools and online gaming; her recent engagements include Design Continuum, Steelcase and Fiskars. Sara hopes to pursue a career in design research and planning.

An architect by training, Fred leads multidisciplinary teams to create immersive, interactive spaces for diverse industries, including healthcare, education, retail, financial services, and workplace design. His work in healthcare service delivery includes a new patient-care model for DePaul Health Center in St. Louis; a new cardiac-care center for Memorial Hospital in South Bend, Indiana; and a new format for mobile dental-care centers for On-Site Dental.

Cobie is a product design student at the Institute of Design. Anticipating a career in design, he studied architecture and art history at Colgate University and then worked in operations for two start-ups during the Dot-Com era to learn about the entrepreneurial side of business. More recently, he worked for Fiskars and for ZIBA in design research roles.

Presentation: Design to End Poverty

ApproTEC is a nonprofit social enterprise that develops and promotes low cost capital equipment that is purchased by poor entrepreneurs in Africa who use it to start highly profitable businesses. To date over 38,000 new micro-enterprises have been started in East Africa using ApproTEC equipment and 800 more are being started each month. Together the revenue from these new businesses is equal to over 0.5% of Kenya’s GDP, and 0.2% of Tanzania’s GDP.
