Professional Degrees

The Institute of Design offers two professional graduate degrees, the Master of Design (MDes) and the Master of Design Methods (MDM).

MDes Program
The Master of Design (MDes) is a two-year, full-time degree intended for those seeking professional mastery at the highest level in the field of communication or product design or design planning. It is suitable for people who want to enter design from other fields, designers with two to three years of experience who want an intensive period of focused professional study and project work, and people seeking a design teaching credential.

The MDes program can be taken together with the MBA program at the Stuart School of Business in two years plus one quarter, including summer study, via our dual degree program.

MDM Program
The Master of Design Methods (MDM) is a one year full-time degree, also offered part-time over two to three years, and is intended for mid-career design and innovation leaders who seek to add a more analytical methodology to their competency. Prerequisites include an undergraduate degree, at least five years of professional leadership experience as evidenced by peer evaluations, an exemplary portfolio (for those with design backgrounds), and strong recommendations, awards or other honors.
