  The engageID newsletter is back!

The newsletter is back online! There is a lot going on at the Institute of Design this semester and engageID wants you to know about it. ID events, projects and students will be our focus, but we will also feature things of interest around Chicago that we have seen or that you send in. Our regular features will be similar to those in this first issue:

ID news - announcements of events upcoming and recently passed
new IDers - an introduction to a new ID student
Showcase - reviews of recent student work and classes
Of interest - what's going on around chicago, featuring Chicago restaurant favorites from Zachary Jean Paradis

Many more we will be incorporating in the next issues...

We will send out a new issue every two weeks, but we will need help to do it. Recommend your classmates' work to be featured. Tell us about an interesting project that you worked on. If you know of cool things happening in the city, pass the news along for us to share with the community.

We want to people to know what's going on here, so we will make the newsletter available on the website for all the world to see. We also want to know what all of our readers have to say. Send us email about anything you want to see or anything you think we should know. Help us make the newsletter a success.

  SocialID's new committee introduce themselves

For the Spring 2006 semester Chelsea Holzworth, Joyce Chen, and Mycal Elliott will be your party captains. Greetings.

This term we are looking to accomplish a few things. First, and foremost, The End of the Year Show/ Party. It's a tradition here at ID and is an opportunity for students to show their work with friends and family as well as a chance to blow off some nurtured steam.

In addition, we are looking forward to conducting more frequent and less formal events but our lips are sealed at this point. We will let you know when we know.

Thank you guys for electing us and we are looking forward to making some things happen. Cheers.

Showcase
  Student project: Retail Experience
by Wei Liu for Product Workshop and Demo 1

These are Wei Liu's proof-of-concept renderings from fall 2005 product design workshop and Demonstration project 1.

In his own words, "The ideas come from the research of my Demo 1, and currently I'm in the phase of integrating these two ideas for Demo 2 to create a seamless and fun music trying and information sharing experience to attract consumers to purchase and burn physical CDs in store."

The Virgin one comes out of Chris Conley's product design workshop while the Retail Communicator is a result of class Research and Demo 1. The research was done with fellow students Rachel Pluto, Christine Kim, Kristina Marich and Carmelina Piedra. His advisors in Demo are Dale Fahnstrom, Greg Prygrocki, Jeremy Alexis and Patrick Whitney.

Photography Workshop: Social Tectonics

The title, "Social Tectonics," in the course catalog, made us immediately curious. engageID spoke with the class' professor, John Grimes, and one of the students to get the scoop.

In essence, the class deals with documentary photography; however, as the name suggests, it is focused not only on the current state of the photographic subject but also on their history and movements through space and society.

In geology, tectonics is the study of the movement of land masses, but due to the scales of time and space, the movements must be studied indirectly by looking at the form and contents of the layers of earth built up over time. This metaphor drives the class. The photography is aimed to find similar layering and juxtaposition of cultural artifacts and experiences in the city's landscape.

To focus the investigation, the students looked specifically at the topics of change in Food, Family and Dating. They then zoomed in on a particular geographical area within the city. I spoke briefly with 2nd year student, Yared Akalou who described the class as "instrumental to rounding out my experience at id." His group's project explored the changing landscape of Division street, and separated its findings into five categories: architecture, movement, people, texture, edges. Division street is especially diverse as it crosses the city, cutting through almost every demographic possible. Yared, who worked previous to ID as a professional photographer, saw the class as a way to "help me to increase my awareness of events that are changing around us, that we may take for granted and being able to identify what was the past, what is the present, and what will be the future and documenting those changes through photography."

To fully appreciate the projects, you have to see them in their whole. Because of this, layout, sequence and other document creation issues were very important parts of the class as well. If you would like to see more of this work, Yared's group is going to revise their layout and refine it for end of year student show.

This photography workshop was taught for the third time this fall by John Grimes.

I am 27 years old. I was born in Saint Louis, USA. My background is in Product Design and Art assistance. I am married and I have 1 super quiet daughter : D

How did you end up at ID? what were your motivations for coming? where were you working?
Actually I took a class "Innovation Planning & Design" which was taught by Professor Ding-Bon Lu (graduate from IIT Design planing PHD program) at my college in Taiwan. That class was really a kind of "Brain explode" experience. It truly opened my mind that innovation design should be the way I go. So I came to ID to find the starting point.
In Taiwan I had done lots of styling work as a product designer, mainly focusing on electronic product and ceiling fan design. I also have a one year of work experience as a kite artist for art assistance and exhibtion planing.

What are your first impressions about ID (people, faculty, the space, the city..)?
Well organized, fast pace, a little too rational and friendly schoolmates.

What do you think you can bring to the people her at id (culturally, socially,..)?
Some experience about the industry at Taiwan and China lots of pratical design experience.
Say some poor jokes?:P

Is there anything amazing from your culture or where you come from that you think people should not miss? (music, culture, design, food, cities, beliefs..)
There has a great kite exhibition at Winter Garden NYC (close to Ground 0), you cana lot of awesome art kites there.

Which are the designers or thinkers have impressed you the most lately or you are following now?
Umm... there are two teachers I'm trying to be like them. Shi-Kuan Chan (Chief designer of Philips Taiwan Design Center) and Kumo Chou (Chief designer of Motorola Asian Design Center)

Restaurants review: "The Smoke Daddy"
by Zachary Jean Paradis

Having lived as a food-lover in Chicago for the past 15 years, Zachary Jean Paradis has tried his fair share of fabulous (and terrible) restaurants. Here's one of his favorites:

Located in Chicago's Wicker Park neighborhood, Smoke Daddy is an absolutely essential find for BBQ lovers living in Chicago. Designed and decorated to mimic the classic feel of a 1950's juke joint, Smoke Daddy features free live jazz, blues or rock-a-billy every night of the week in addition to a full complement of BBQ.

Speaking of the BBQ, its style is some where between the dry-rub Memphis style and the slathered St. Louis approach. It it is a perfect compromise and the accompanying hot, mustard and sweet sauces (all home-made) are the perfect complement. The sandwiches and platters are not only tasty but enormous and very reasonably priced. When you go for the first time, make sure to get an order of the sweet potato french fries. Their flavor is delectable and a perfect addition to your serving of pulled-pork, roasted turkey, slathered beef or smokey ribs. Mmmmmmmmmmmm good.

Around town : "Rotofugi" Designer Toy Store
by Alex Cheek

The other night, my birthday actually, I went by this store called Rotofugi. I had heard that they were a "designer toy store," but that didn't mean a whole lot to me. I heard they would have free drinks and a DJ for the presentation of a new line of toys, so we went.

Plus, it looked kind of cool. When we got to the store on Chicago Ave., I was surprised at the number of people crowded into the small store. The DJ was there as promised, but I didn't even make it to the drink line before I was drawn off to check out the toys. Most of them were cartoonish molded vinyl figurines, but the closer I looked, the more detail stood out. The bunnies were smoking cigarettes, the green felt astronaut was actually Jesus. The people crowded around two people sitting on the floor, drawing on a pair of blank figurines. Turns out, these were some of the designers featured for the night and they were, in effect, signing work for people by drawing on them. On the way out, we spotted a real favorite named the "Son of Moustachio" a plush mustache shaped thing whose tag read, "We bet you five bucks you've never seen a moustache with a moustache! This manly 'stache inherited tons of machismo from his father , and will pass it down along with yet another moustache - to his own son someday. Designer: Shawn Smith" We all tried it on. I didn't expect it at all, but I was truly tempted to buy one of these little guys modeled after a Mexican shaman. Go by and check it out!
