From simple to complex forms of transferal of information, human beings draw on a multiplicity of communicative modes, such as facial expression, gaze, gestures, body posture, speech, writing and proxemics, to convey meaning and make sense of everyday experiences. Likewise, the learning process, either within traditional classrooms or Adaptive Multimodal Digital Learning Environments, is shaped, intentionally or not, by learners' perceptions of what is being multimodally communicated to them and limited by the affordances for communication and learning of the learning environment. The present study examines the specific place of multimodal interaction within the online learning process from a user-centered design perspective. The goal is to conceive innovative online learning experiences through the deep and multi-sided understanding of learners and how they interact with their context, focusing on graduate education. From the observations, this research develops actionable insights and extracts patterns of behavior that ground the development of a methodological framework for designing Adaptive Multimodal Learning Environments |
