Title: Mediating Artifacts in Design Research

Early Abstract: Mediating artifacts such as prototypes and probes have been used in all phases of user research, but their influences on collected data have not been thoroughly discussed. In this research, the roles of mediating artifacts and relevant theoretical concepts will be examined in literature review. Some artifacts that serve as probes in design research/projects to facilitate idea generation will be investigated with the author's original experiments in which characteristics of effective probes will be identified. This research will lay partial guidelines in designing, choosing, and using tangible artifacts as probes for data collection and idea exploration in the early stages of design research/projects, making research activities fun and engaging experiences for both researchers and participants.
