Sharon Helmer Poggenpohl has practiced design in Chicago, Louisville, Philadelphia and Rochester, New York for nonprofit clients which have included the Alan Guttmacher Institute, Pew Charitable Trusts, and the American Society of Opthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons, Inc. Widely published and a frequent invited speaker, she has taught design at the Institute of Design, as well as the University of Kansas, University of the Arts and Rhode Island School of Design. In 1990, she became the editor and publisher of Visible Language, a distinguished international interdisciplinary scholarly journal. She has served on the boards of the American Institute of Graphic Arts (AIGA) and American Center for Design and now serves as a board member of the American Center for Design Education Foundation.
