>>> This way to my CV <<<
Jay Melican is Senior Research Associate in the Department of Social Sciences at Illinois Institute of Technology (IIT), where his work is concerned with the social implications of new technologies and with the ways that designers (and design teams) apply social and behavioral research data in their creative problem-solving processes. He earned his Ph.D. in design from IIT in 2000.
In 2002, Jay led a team of ethnographic researchers and documentary filmmakers in a global study of the social impact of mobile and ubiquitous communication technologies. He recently joined Dr. Christena Nippert-Eng in her investigation of contemporary conceptions of privacy and challenges to it. His current projects focus on identity management and (digital) presentation of self; on trust and reputation (especially in commercial transactions); on communicative access management (especially as that relates to role performance and individuals' ability to filter multiple, simultaneous demands for their attention); and on the implications of ubiquitous computing technologies for communities' sense of space/place and time.
Jay lectures on the adjunct faculty at the Institute of Design at Illinois Institute of Technology, and has taught observational and ethnographic research methods to inform and inspire design at the Interaction Design Institute in Ivrea, Italy. He holds a bachelor's degree in semiotics from Brown University. He earned his MFA in information-oriented graphic design from Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). In his previous professional lives, Jay has worked with Aaron Marcus and Associates in Emeryville, California, designing and analyzing human-computer interaction schemes for software product development. He has worked with Motorola New Enterprises in Schaumburg, Illinois on analyzing and redesigning the consumer experience of purchasing mobile telephony equipment. And he has worked with Doblin Group -- a product strategy consulting firm in Chicago -- developing participatory client workshops.
