observing the Old Town School of Folk Music a study of research methods
Problem
The Old Town School of Folk Music is a Chicago music landmark. As the school continues to grow in two locations, how can they continue to promote their values and sense of community?
Solution
This project used methods of observing users to determine how the Old Town School could continue to foster growth. We used ethnographic interviews, personal inventories, photo documentation, and observations using the POEMS framework to get a sense of how people were using the space.
Solutions for the school included: a campaign for historical significance using existing exterior wall space and local transit stations, inclusion of a greeting area at the entrance, expansion of the music store and coffee shop, and a quiet sitting room for parents.
